Photo by @FransLanting: From a small plane I had a bird’s-eye view of coral reefs in a shallow lagoon in Australia’s Great Barrier Reef, the largest animal-made structure on Earth. Coral reefs developed as a unique partnership between the polyps that build the corals and the algae that provide the nutrients to the polyps, which shelter the algae in their tissues. The resulting coexistence is one of the grandest expressions on our planet of life as a symbiosis. This is one of the signature images for my project “LIFE: A Journey Through Time.” For the 10th anniversary of LIFE, it will be performed at Chicago’s Grant Park Music Festival on July 20, 2016.
