Photo by @FransLanting: I visualized the surging motion of an incoming tide with a time exposure as a wave swept through kelp along the shore of a forlorn island south of New Zealand. Millions of petrels and penguins use this island as a home base for a life that is dependent on the bounty of the surrounding sub-Antarctic waters. This is one of the signature images for my project “LIFE: A Journey Through Time,” which we produced as a multimedia symphony that features my images and the music of Philip Glass. LIFE is a lyrical interpretation of the story of life on Earth, from the Big Bang to the present. The LIFE symphony has been staged around the world and for its 10th anniversary, it will be performed at Chicago’s Grant Park Music Festival on July 20, 2016.
