During the Civil War, this was the headquarters flag used by the Army of the Cumberland. A main Union force in the Western Theater of the Civil War, it was commanded by William Rosecrans.
After Rosecrans’s defeat at Chickamauga in Tennessee and northwestern Georgia, George Thomas was appointed commander of the Army of the Cumberland because of his gallant actions and leadership in the battle,
George Thomas was known as the Rock of Chickamauga.
