Fancy a bowl of squirrel soup? Partying like it’s 1899 with #WeThePartyPeople here tonight, we’re joined by culinary time traveler and chef @ailsavond. Her cooking demo highlighted one of President Garfield’s favorite meals: squirrel soup.
Born in Ohio, James A. Garfield was the third Civil War general to become president. Garfield’s presidential plans included reforming federal hiring and service, but he was assassinated only four months into his term. He was the second president to be killed in office.
According to chef Ailsa, Garfield loved milk and bread. She says, “He overcame dysentery during the Civil War but the tummy troubles never truly left him. Without the luxury of Pepto, the President had to monitor his diet with no cheat days. He drank glass upon glass of milk. As far as his food hates: oatmeal came in as number one. His wife, Lucretia, was adamant he ate it and was dedicated to providing the family ‘an abundance of wholesome, nutritious food with good coffee and tea’ in her home.” #AmericaNow #SmithsonianFood #FoodHistory #ACreativeDC #DCcool
