In honor of #NYCPride Week, we are featuring a few works from our collection by LGBTQ+ artists whose creative practices reference this identity and/or experience. First up is #ZaneleMuholi—you may remember her from last year’s exhibition Isibonelo/Evidence. This work is part of Faces and Phases, a series of over 200 portraits documenting South Africa’s black lesbian and transgender community. These photographs, which Muholi refers to as “visual activism,” serve as both visual statement and archive, “marking, mapping, and preserving an often invisible community for posterity.”
