This week we’re highlighting some of the sacred and mythical beasts in the Museum. In Hindu belief, the golden bird-like creature Garuda is the mount of the god Vishnu. Being a creature of the air, he was seen to despise creatures of the land and had a natural hatred of snakes and serpents. Garuda is often depicted holding a snake in each of his claws.
This 19th-century Tibetan Garuda features in the film Night at the Museum: Secret of the Tomb, which was filmed on location at the British Museum. Garuda is also the national emblem of Indonesia.
