Vanished beneath the waters of the Mediterranean, the lost cities of Thonis-Heracleion and Canopus lay at the mouth of the Nile. Their story is told for the first time in our blockbuster exhibition #SunkenCities, opening this Thursday. The amazing discovery of these cities is transforming our understanding of the deep connections between the great ancient civilisations of Egypt and Greece. Alongside colossal statues, underwater archaeologists have also recovered many stunning examples of gold jewellery.
The pieces of gold jewellery discovered reflect the cosmopolitan nature of Ptolemaic society. They display a variety of artistic styles relating to the many cultures that met in Thonis-Heracleion. This hoop earring with a mythical creature is inspired by motifs commonly found in the Middle East, associated with Persian craftsmen. This earring was discovered in a temple of Thonis-Heracleion, where it was probably deposited as an offering.
