Submerged under the sea for over a thousand years, two lost cities of ancient Egypt were recently rediscovered. From magnificent colossal statues to intricate gold jewellery, the objects discovered tell stories of political power and popular belief, myth and migration, gods and kings.
This gold ring with an engraved gem was discovered in a shipwreck in the eastern port (Portus Magnus) of Alexandria. The engraving depicts an eagle holding a victory crown in its beak, standing above a lightning bolt. Associated with the Greek god Zeus (and his Roman equivalent Jupiter), this was a popular symbol of divinely ordained victory adopted first by the Ptolemaic dynasty who reigned Egypt from 332 to 30 BC, and then by the Roman Empire.
