Katsushika Hokusai, one of the most famous names in Japanese art, died #onthisday in 1849. This print comes from his series Fugaku sanjūrokkei (‘Thirty-six Views of Mt Fuji’) made around 1829–1832. The major factor in establishing landscape as a new genre of ukiyo-e print was probably the sudden availability in the later 1820s of the new cheap Berlin blue pigment, which had recently become available from China.
In this print titled ‘Soshu Umezawa-zai’ (Umezawa Manor in Sagami Province), clouds of pink-tinted morning mist part to reveal a blue Fuji, devoid of human presence. A group of five cranes feed in the foreground and another pair fly up into the sky in parallel with the long slope of the mountain. The inclusion of these auspicious birds has led to the suggestion that publication may have been timed to coincide with the New Year of 1831. The colour-scheme, though still dominated by Berlin blue, is no longer entirely blue.
