Visible between the camp and the two cities is half a caldera, which was active in the 2002 Nyiragongo eruption. Directly behind and below the photographer, who is standing on the rim of the Nyiragongo caldera, is the largest lava lake in the world. Since 1882, Nyiragongo has erupted at least 34 times. The last eruption, in 2002, destroyed 15% of Goma (4500 buildings), killed 147 people and left 120,000 people homeless.
