“The exhibition ”Black Male” at @whitneymuseum was huge for me. And the catalogue is one of those books I continue to go back to. That @thelmagolden, a black woman, curated it gave me the confidence to also tell my story. That I could have a voice as a woman — we who are daughters, mothers, sisters, all of those things. Thelma created a conversation we needed about contemporary art and ... the power of imagery. All of these issues are still a part of a national conversation. I definitely think about the power of media imagery today. About #BlackLivesMatter. For a long time, my work has been dealing with these issues from my own experiences, and I’ve continued to think about how to contextualize humanity around blackness in my work.”—@jordanmcasteel.
