Moose and the other members of the deer family are starting to grow their antlers again. Every year, the process begins in spring as the bone reveals itself wrapped in highly vascular skin called velvet, which supplies the fastest growing bone on earth with oxygen, blood, and other nutrients. In autumn, the velvet will fall off and the calcium bone will die. After a few more months the male will shed the entire antler, thus beginning the growing process all over again.
