This bird pictured here is the literal definition of a needle in a haystack. It is actually an owl, a northern pygmy owl to be exact. This owl's body is approximately 4 inches tall and even with its small stature, this bird has a serious attitude. It is known to hunt and capture prey almost 3 times its size! I can remember when I first wanted to find one, I didn't even attempt to look because I heard stories that it was near impossible locating them. I'm sure glad I did look as I got to spend an amazing 2 hours with the little guy, deep within a forested canyon. As far as you know, one of these little owls may live nearby to you! Matter of fact, as I write this, two great horned owls are hooting in a tree right in my backyard!
