Tonight Amale Andraos, principal of WORKac and dean of @columbiagsapp, shared her perspective on James Wines's "Highrise of Homes" project for SITE (Sculpture in the Environment) from 1981. Wines's architectural drawing depicts a steel-and-concrete frame intended for an urban area filled with homes and gardens in various styles on each floor. "Architectural drawings are a very real engagement with ideas, not just the production of an image," Andraos says. "I don't think this project is cynical. It's playful. It's taking a very real desire people have—to have their own house—and arranging it differently, which is what we do as architects. There are things we can say about architecture or the world through a narrative." Developers considered Battery Park City in New York as a possible location for the project, but it was never built. The drawing is on view through March 6 in the exhibition "Endless House: Intersections of Art and Architecture."
