The pillbox hat, named for its resemblance to the cylindrical cases in which pills were sold, has a flat crown and no brim. This one is part of the #ObjectProject teaching collection, and museum educators use it in an activity that lets visitors explore different #HistoricalHats.

The pillbox was first worn by women in the 1930s and saw increased popularity again in the early 1960s, when First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy sported the style to many events. Common fabrics for pillbox hats included wool, velvet, and fur; occasionally, veils were added.
