While the bombs of World War I fell around them, French women did needlework. The cross-stitched scenes they made, depicting soldiers, flags, airplanes, and coats of arms, were sold in America through the Society for Employment of Women in France, and the money from their sale went back to the women and their families in France.

This week, we're exploring participation—people joining together to accomplish shared goals—in American history, with a close eye on our textile collections.
Have you quilted for a cause? Donated clothes or blankets? Purchased homemade goods to support communities and artists?
