This is a "dog head" bonnet (see the ears?) made by Chinese immigrant Mrs. Lee for her only son, Peter. Chinese mothers traditionally dressed their one-year-old children in such bonnets to protect them from evil spirits. Mrs. Lee came to America after marrying Lee B. Lok, who moved to New York's Chinatown after 1881 from China. He became a successful businessman and even founded the Chinese Merchants Association, becoming a prominent community member. However, U.S. laws barred him from citizenship.

This week, we're talking about participation in American culture and democracy, with an eye on our textile collections. This object tells stories of cultural identity, participation, and exclusion.
