The stamping of flat bread was common in Egypt from the Roman period onwards. In the Byzantine period (AD 395–c. 640s) it was found mainly in churches, where the communion bread was stamped with Christian symbols. This practice was also adopted in everyday life, when other motifs appeared and it was not restricted to Christians. Ornamental bread stamps are still in use today, for instance in Morocco, Syria and as far away as Central Asia.
The raised surface of this stamp shows a cross, surrounded by a Greek key-pattern border. In the lower part of the stamp there is a thicker place in the border, which could be either a kind of handle or stand, or possibly damage from fire.

Learn how Jews, Christians and Muslims transformed Egypt in the first millennium AD in our #EgyptExhibition – until 7 February 2016.
