Across Europe, North Africa and the Middle East, the first millennium AD witnessed the radical transformation from a world of many gods to the one God of Judaism, Christianity and Islam. Our current #EgyptExhibition explores these changes through objects both sacred and everyday.
This bread stamp is engraved with the image of a menorah standing on a tripod. At the sides of the candlestick are two characters. It is thought that they represent a shofar (ram’s horn) and an incense burner, which would suggest it was used to mark kosher bread. The back of the stamp has an impression of a palm branch engraved on it. The palm branch (lulav) is one of the symbols most often appearing with the menorah in Jewish tradition.
