While I was on this expedition ship I rigged time-lapse cameras most days, the captain would turn the radar off and I would don safety harness and climb up to the top of the mast, to check the fixed cameras and fit new batteries and memory cards. Most days I would discover a problem, the (huge) external battery pack would have died, the lens would have frosted over, or thick fog would have shrouded the ship's deck and surrounding ice. I lived for the days when everything worked and instead of 1000 frames of solid white, or black, or nothing, I was able to make a movie that told part of the story of the strange frozen world below the camera.
