Photo by @petekmuller/@prime_collective. A hunter moves through a patch of purple flowers during a hunt in the northern Democratic Republic of #Congo. His rifle is homemade, its barrel constructed from the same metal tubing used for bike seats. Communities in remote areas like this one rely almost entirely on the #forest for sustenance. I followed this hunter and several others over the course of ten days. We pushed deep into the forests of the northeast while tracking animals. I felt, at times, great anxiety about getting lost. To me, all directions in the forest look the same. Amid bouts of neurosis, I would break small branches with the futile hope that I'd be able to find my way back if I got inadvertently separated from the hunters. They had a good laugh at my anxiety. These guys have incredible, intimate knowledge of the forest landscape and can navigate using stars as orientation while following the flow of streams, rivers and other topography.
