A little girl runs down the street and past the Maison du Boucard, one of the few surviving colonial buildings in this beautiful small city of Jacmel, called the city of artists, on the southern coast of Haiti. Photo by @fotokonbit student Darry Dulcine. Founded in 1504 by the Spanish, it was repopulated by the French in 1698. The town's name is derived from it's indigenous Taino name of Yaquimel. In 1896 the city suffered a major fire destroying most of it. The city was rebuilt using re-fabricated cast iron pillars and balconies shipped over from France, which adorned the ornate mansions of wealthy coffee merchants. These mansions would later come to influence the home structures of New Orleans. Jacmel has hosted its own film and music festivals but it's greatest festival is Carnival, A country of singular history, Haiti is the topic of a story in the December issue of @ナショナルジオグラフィック magazine entitled HAITI ON ITS OWN TERMS written by Alexandra Fuller.
