This photo comes from one of the more exhilarating moments from my time in Katmai National Park. I was watching this brown bear work a salmon stream during one evening that had abnormally high winds. The winds were reaching speeds well over 100 mph which would stop me in my tracks when I would try to walk into it. As this bear approached, he somehow managed to see me in the grass and came galloping my way. With the wind blowing across us, I knew there was no way to use my bear spray, so I had to result to yelling and waving my arms like a mad man. The bear approached within about 5 feet, which was way too close for comfort for my liking, and gave me a good look up and down. He paused momentarily, took a sniff, then slowly meandered on his way, looking over his shoulder multiple times to see what I was doing. This bear was most likely no threat as he was a sub-adult, but I was never about to take a chance when he comes fully equipped with claws and teeth that are perfect for human shredding. It's moments like this I always wonder who was the first person to discover that standing your ground with an approaching bruin was the best defense.
