150 years ago today, Europe's iconic pyramid of rock, the Matterhorn, was first climbed by British climber Edward Whymper, who reached the summit together with three Alpine mountain guides and three other English climbers. The team followed the route up the Hörnlegrat [ridge] (pictured here) and nearing the top, switched to the north wall. During the descent, four of the team who were roped together, fell to their deaths over the north wall when one person slipped and pulled the others with him.
