While swimming with young fur seals, this dominant, breeding elephant seal came shooting over to me, attacking me like a rival male. These large bulls reach up to 18 feet in length and weigh up to 8000 pounds. That is more than a full-sized pickup truck. They attack each other all of the time producing deep gouges and wounds. For myself, the attack easily could have been fatal. Fortunately, I was able to use my underwater housing to push off of the seal’s mouth until I could crawl out of the water.
