Many US prisoners—up to ¾—find themselves in cuffs again within five years of their release. Education can change that. The Sustainability in Prisons Project, a collaboration between Washington State prisons and a local university, brings scientists and educators into jails to give lectures and workshops on natural sciences. Prisoners who go through their program are less likely to commit another crime after they’re released, and more likely to find jobs in science and conservation.
