This man is a slave in the brick kilns of India and Nepal. He is one of roughly 27 million people enslaved around the world today -- double the number of people taken from Africa during the entire trans-Atlantic slave trade. In the kilns, entire families work for 16 or 17 hours a day, coated in dust in the sweltering heat (130°F, or 54°C). Photographer Lisa Kristine aims to show their humanity. “No matter how dire, how hard their experience of life has been because of their suffering as a slave,” she says, “they still have dignity, sensitivity, humanness and beauty.” To see more, head to go.ted.com/modernslavery
