Today in 1790: Benjamin Franklin dies. The Founding Father, inventor, and scientist bequeathed this walking stick to George Washington.
What was so special about it? Take a look at the cap on the stick. It's a fur cap like the one Franklin wore around France, symbolic of the American spirit of freedom and independence. One of Franklin's French friends gave him the special walking stick.
Washington could have been a king with a fancy scepter. Instead, he was a democratically-elected leader, and the walking stick seemed fitting.
