150 years ago: On the evening of the assassination of President Lincoln, Vice President Andrew Johnson woke to a loud pounding on his door at the Kirkwood hotel in DC. Former Wisconsin Governor Leonard Farwell, who had just come from Ford's Theater, told Johnson the news.
Johnson wanted to rush to Lincoln's side but was told to stay put until ordered was restored to the streets. He arrived at Lincoln's bedside at dawn. After paying his respects to Mary and Robert Lincoln, he returned to the Kirkwood.
On today's date in 1865, he took the oath of office in the hotel lobby. He had served as vice president for six weeks after a career in Tennessee politics.
