The Black Panther Party was founded 1966 in Oakland, California by Huey P. Newton and Bobby Seale. It was originally known as the Black Panther Party for Self-Defense. Its initial purpose was to patrol black neighborhoods in an effort to protect against police brutality. The Black Panther Party soon became a Marxist revolutionary group that called for the arming of all African Americans. The Black Panther Party was open and inclusive. The Party Welcomed alliances with white activists like Students for a Democratic Society and the Weathermen/Weather Underground. The Black Panther Party quickly became a target of the F.B.I.’s Counterintelligence Program, COINTELPRO. The Black Panther Party came under extreme F.B.I. scrutiny and became the scapegoat for violent crimes across the country, especially if they were gang related crimes. COINTELPRO led to the murders of 28 members of the Black Panther Party. Newton was later convicted of voluntary manslaughter, though the decision was reversed by 1970. After his name was cleared, Newton established "Socialist Survival Programs” that provided free breakfasts for children, free medical clinics, secured housing, and organized free clothing and food drives for the homeless. Tragically, the American government had severely wounded the Black Panther Party by the late 70s. With many integral members either dead or in prison, the Socialist Survival Programs were maintained by remaining female leaders of the Black Panther Party until the remaining Oakland-based programs closed in 1981. The Black Panther Party Research Project was founded in 1997. The women and men who made up the Black Panther Party are Radicals // A collaboration between Mishka and SSUR*PLUS, the Radicals Collection pays homage to the organizations and people who risked their freedom and lives to fight for civil-rights. The collection features 19 portraits illustrated by @benjamin_marra.
