Angela Davis is a renowned educator, activist, writer and thought leader in Feminist Theory and the abolishment of the prison-industrial complex. Her political activism began early. As a child she witnessed white supremacists bomb her neighbors home in a violent act against integration. Davis was living in Birmingham, Alabama at the time. Davis went on to become a powerful voice in the civil-rights movement. Like many of her peers in the Black Panther Party and Black Liberation Army, Davis was falsely accused of kidnapping and murder. Davis was acquitted of all charges in 1972. In 1973 she helped found the National Alliance Against Racist and Political Repression to help free political prisoners. Since then, Davis has become a leader in the movement to abolish prisons. She has given lectures and written books to educate people about the purposefully corrupt practices of the prison-industrial complex. She is now Distinguished Professor Emerita in the History of Consciousness and Feminist Studies Departments at the University of California, Santa Cruz.
