Assata Shakur is the first woman to be named on the F.B.I.’s most wanted terrorists list, 40 years after the crime she was convicted of. Shakur, born Joanne Deborah Byron (married name: Chesimard), on July 16th, 1947 in Queens, New York is a hero of the civil-rights movement who currently lives in Cuba, where she was granted political asylum in 1984. She has been an integral and powerful member of the Black Panther Party and the Black Liberation Army. Shakur, specifically, became a target of the F.B.I.’s Counterintelligence Program known as COINTELPRO. On May 2, 1973, Assata Shakur and two other BLA members were stopped on the New Jersey Turnpike by New Jersey state troopers. After the officers discovered guns in their cars, a confrontation began. Assata Shakur was shot, a member of the BLA was killed, one state trooper suffered minor injuries, and another, Werner Foerster, was also killed. Shakur was accused and convicted of Foerster's murder though there was no solid evidence against her. She spent the next four years detained by authorities and was the first woman ever to be confined in a men’s prison. Shakur eventually escaped prison in 1979 and has been a fugitive living in Cuba ever since. Though she cannot return to America she has remained a vocal and powerful proponent of the ongoing civil-rights movement. Assata Shakur is a Radical // A collaboration between Mishka and SSUR*PLUS, the Radicals Collection pays homage to the organizations and people who risked their freedom and lives to fight for civil-rights.
