Sled #dogs before beginning a training routine in Esso, a village in Russia’s Kamchatka Peninsula. The region is caught between ambitious plans to develop untapped resources and efforts to preserve its natural splendor — among other things, 300 volcanoes and waters inhabited by crabs that are as big as turkeys. @sergeyponomarev photographed events surrounding the annual #Beringia dog sled race, which was conceived 25 years ago as Russia’s answer to the Iditarod in Alaska. The trek — named after a legendary land mass said to have once linked the region to Alaska — takes participants 590 miles across Kamchatka. #Russia
