We had close encounters with the handsome macaroni penguins, the most numerous penguin species on the planet, numbering 18 million. They have large nesting colonies at South Georgia like one we visited at Cooper Bay. In the 18th century, a person dressing in flamboyant style was called a “macaroni” as in the song “Yankee Doodle” and that is where they get their name.
