Our ship, the National Geographic Orion, lies in King Haakon Bay on South Georgia. It was below the bluff where I made this photo, called Peggotty Bluff, where Earnest Shackleton and his men camped after sailing their lifeboat, the James Caird, from Elephant Island during the famous rescue mission to save his men stranded on Elephant Island after the failed 1914-1916 Trans Antarctic Expedition. Besides the wildlife, having a chance to walk in Shackleton’s footsteps 100 years later was an exciting aspect to a South Georgia visit. From here, Shackleton hiked over South Georgia to a whaling station on the north side to eventually get help, and return and rescue all his men.
