Today in 1848: The Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo is ratified, ending the United States' war with Mexico. In the Battle of Cerro Gordo in 1847, General Winfield Scott had his engineers carefully map the area, a battle advantage. This coat and hat were the uniform coat of a Topographical Engineer.

By the terms of the treaty, Mexico ceded 55% of its territory, including parts of present-day Arizona, California, New Mexico, Texas, Colorado, Nevada, and Utah, to the United States.
