It was such a treat to see the Atlantic Puffins pair off along the coastal cliffs of #Iceland last summer. Puffins make burrows instead of nests, and it's unclear whether they remember their mating partner or just the burrow. If one of the pair is late showing up to their summer home the other may take another mate, but will then kick the new partner out if the original eventually shows up. They spend the entire rest of the year sleeping and eating out at sea where they will also lose the bright colors of their summer breeding beaks.
