Emmanuel was founded during the reign of Queen Elizabeth on the site of a former Dominican monastery, and many of the monastery's original foundations survive to the present day. Emmanuel served as a model for America’s oldest college, Harvard University, whose founder, John Harvard, was an Emmanuel graduate. Walking through the courtyard, the echoes of your footsteps sounding off the old stones, you can almost hear the plainsong chants of the Domonican monks traveling over the centuries, almost taste the intellectual ferment of hundreds of years of scholarship.
