@marcusbleasdale A child miner digs for gold in Watsa, northweastern Congo. @humanrightswatch exposed the links between these abuses and the ongoing war in eastern DRC in our 2005 report The Curse of Gold. They also revealed the role of international corporations in the violations, specifically the role of a gold mining company called AngloGold Ashanti. The attention and pressure generated by the report led AngloGold Ashanti to take concrete steps to ensure that their activities in Congo were not linked to human rights violations. Meanwhile, another company, Metalor technologies, agreed to stop buying gold mined in Congo.
IMPACT is an exhibition focusing on the collaboration between @marcusbleasdale @humanrightswatch who have been using photography for many years to increase the power of the message and increase the IMPACT of the work of the researchers in the field. This collaboration has led to some extraordinary results and we would like to celebrate those achievements in this exhibition at #Christies in London this week @thephotographersgallery @ナショナルジオグラフィック #humanrightshumanwrongs
