155 years ago today: Abolitionist John Brown is hanged for his raid on a federal arsenal in Harpers Ferry, West Virginia. He had been trying to spark a slave rebellion.
This is his Sharps rifle, which was made especially for him. He carried it on his Kansas campaign in 1856 and later presented it to Charles Blair of Collinsville, Connecticut. Blair forged the pikes he intended to arm slaves with during his Harpers Ferry insurrection.
