Chehaw River, ACE Basin
I try to make photographs that are “about' things not just “of" them.
What is it like to stand in chest-high marsh grass at dawn, perhaps the only human on 8,000 acres ? Tides of salt pushing against fresh water, the delicate sound of waterfowl passing overhead; you are immersed in a symphony of life. That a place like this exists is extraordinary because it is surrounded by the development of the 21th century.
25 years ago a community of private and public minds moved toward preserving this fragile ecosystem nestled and surrounded by development is just 30 miles from Charleston, South Carolina. Today it's known as the ACE Basin, one of the last great estuaries.
