Here, a massive male orca with a 6 foot tall dorsal fin tries to control a large bait ball of herring in #Norway. Follow us at @paulnicklen and @sea_legacy for different apex predators each day of this week. Found in all oceans and most seas; their diet differs according to the type of orca and where they range. For example, transient orcas feed on marine mammals (including other dolphins and whales), resident orcas consume salmon and other fish, and offshore orcas feed on sharks and squid. Most likely the largest population of orcas live in Antarctic waters, where they range up to the edge of pack ice and feed on seals. In contrast, orcas in the Arctic do not inhabit the pack ice and are seasonal summer guests. Coastal New Zealand is home to ray-hunting orcas. One thing is certain; they are at the top of the food chain wherever they are.
