High school students Samantha (pictured here), Ashley and Sujaya from Florida are aspiring doctors, so they chose to research Elizabeth Blackwell—the first woman to receive a medical degree in the United States—for their National History Day project. One of their biggest challenges was transcribing Dr. Blackwell’s hand-written correspondence, which they found in the Columbia University archives. As part of their research, Samantha made a trip to Asheville, NC, to see the monument dedicated to Dr. Blackwell there. #NHD2014 #medicalhistory
