Today in 1869: In Promontory, Utah, the ceremonial "Golden Spike" is driven into the "last tie" to complete the first transcontinental rail link in the United States.
A month later, Hart Farwell, age eight, chipped this piece from the last tie as a souvenir and kept it for the rest of his life. However, the tie was not the real last tie. Relic hunters had already chipped the first one to bits and the tie had been replaced many times. #todayinhistory #souvenir #tourism
