It’s always a great feeling when you get your hands on the grail for whatever you collect or have a passion for. Whether it’s sneakers, cars, or watches they all will hold a place with us that is just a different. A little bit of congratulations is in order for @theydid for picking up his grail #Panerai. A Pre-V #Panerai 5218 5218-201/A . You don’t find many that are a complete set like the one he picked up which is amazing. This is one of the historic pieces in a long line of Panerai watches. This model came out in 1993 during the Pre-V (Pre Vendome) Era of the company. Pre-V Pieces were produced between 1993 and 1997 before being sold to the Vendome group, which later was bought by the Richmont Group in 1998. Just a little bit of information to pass along instead of the book that can be written about these pieces. You will notice people in the Panerai world referring to these pieces as “Matching” and “Non Matching”. When they are saying that, they are referring to the Hands and the Dial. On pre-Vendome dials, there's a protective varnish applied over the tritium. This can accelerate the discoloration of the tritium, even turning in almost blood orange on earlier watches. The discoloration could already be noticed within a couple of months after production. It all depends on the actual mixture of the tritium paint, how "fresh" it was when applied, and on the actual specification, condition and thickness of the varnish when that was applied. Lots of chemical reaction is possible. The First production batches of the 5218-201A models didn’t get the varnish treatment on the hands leaving the hands more white than the dial numbers over time. The newer batches received treatment on both the hands and the dial allowing both to age naturally together. At the end of the day some purists love the non matching dial and others swear by the matching. On the open market though, the matching dial tends to pull in a little bit more money.
