I was born in the 80's. Growing up, I thought my Mom was obsessed with black dolls. I didn't understand WHY it was so important to her that her girls have them. I didn't know that the 1st black Barbie Doll had only just come out in 1980, or that the 1st black Cabbage Patch Doll released in '83. All I knew was that it was such a big deal to my Mom. It was almost as if she cared more than we did- she jumped hoops! I remember them always being sold-out at every toy store. I remember traveling far...there were never enough on the shelves, I suppose, especially for Atlanta. But it was an event...an adrenaline rush. I actually remember being legitimately scared, wondering if they were just testing it out or something...will they choose to stop making them? Were WE a limited edition? Would WE be discontinued? I mean, judging from the way she aggressively pursued them and the way her actions inspired us to treasure them...makes me believe that maybe she had that fear too... But now I get it. Dolls are a little girl's first idea of/experience with beauty...it was about our beauty finally being represented. It was about seeing a reflection of ourselves. It was about pride in who we are.....thanks Mom. It worked.
