Glen Canyon Dam, Arizona. Photo by @peteressick. In recent years, there has been a new understanding about just how damaging the dam building era from the 1930s to 1960s in the USA was. Dams such as Glen Canyon were built primarily to provide a reliable source of water to the nearby population. As the population continued to grow exponentially, it be came apparent that there was not enough water in the Colorado River to provide the comfortable American lifestyle for them all. Scientists and water managers also discovered that much reservoir water evaporates in the desert heat before it can ever be used. We can't just rely on big dams to provide for our needs. On a small scale, a little community may be able to install a micro dam in a remote location@to good effect, but the large-scale dams that block major rivers carry too high an environmental and cultural price. The bigger message is that humans can't harness nature; we can only learn to live within it.
