Photograph by @JohnStanmeyer Facing towards Mecca, villagers pray along the dry banks of the Wombradu River, asking God to bring rain to Sudumta village in Bidu district of Afar, Ethiopia. This district in the northern part of the country hadn't seen rain in over one year. — Photograph is part of this months National Geographic cover story, Our Greatest Journey. Personal Notes: During my final days in Ethiopia before crossing into Djibouti on the Out of Eden project, Yonas (my friend and guide) and I stopped in a village called Sudumta, a relatively new town cobbled together after an asphalt road built by the Chinese had made this otherwise remote village more accessible. Taking a break after a long morning of photography, I looked in the distance and saw a group of men praying. But something was amiss — it was not the normal time for morning prayers. Running over rocks trying to witness the final moments, I was struck by the incredibly stark landscape before them, trying quickly to sort a means to make a meaning image without disturbing this deeply moving moment. After prayers I was welcomed by all then asked why they were praying. In a solemn passionate voice, the Imam said they're livestock were dying and food was becoming nearly impossible to grow — it hadn't rained in over a year. Astonishingly enough, Mecca was located in the direct path of the rocky valley where once water flowed in abundance. I felt weakened and depressed on how weather pattern change continues to severely affect so many on our planet. I was pleased during editing that this image made it into this months National Geographic story, Our Greatest Journey, as a reminder of how precious water is for all of us on our fragile planet. @NatGeo @OutOfEdenWalk @ThePhotoSociety @VIIPhoto #Ethiopia #Islam #prayer #climatechange #hands
