Tai Lake, China. Photo by @peteressick on assignment for @ナショナルジオグラフィック. Who would like to have their wedding photo made at a polluted lake? Many couples do at Tai Lake, the third largest freshwater lake in China. The lake is renowned for its scenic views and pagodas, but in recent years has suffered from pollution from fertilizer runoff and development. In the 1980s and 90s the number of industries in the lake region tripled and the population also increased significantly. In 2007, Wu Lihong, an environmentalist who had been publicizing the pollution on Tai Lake for a decade, was sentenced to three years in prison for alleged extortion of one of the polluters. The Chinese government subsequently reported that they had shut down 4,100 chemical plants and 1,800 livestock and poultry farms near the lake and issued a plan to clean up the lake by 2012. Wu was released from prison in 2010 and continues to be an environmental advocate for the restoration of Tai Lake.
