Commuting is part of your work day, only it's unpaid and there's a relatively high chance somebody's going to cough into your mouth. Famously, there's not a lot to love about it.

Helpfully, a 2023 study has confirmed just how much it sucks, finding that those who spend over an hour commuting to work are 16 percent more likely to suffer from clinical depression than those who spend under 30 minutes on their commute.

The research team analysed 23,415 workers in South Korea, the country thought to have both the longest average commuting time and the highest depressive symptoms among OECD countries. The results found that commuting can cause both physical and psychological stress, which can negatively impact health.

"With less time to spare, people could be short of time to relieve stress and combat physical fatigue through sleep, hobbies, and other activities," the researchers said. "They also have less time to invest in healthy lifestyle habits, including exercise, which may contribute to depression."

Nothing too surprising there, then.
